Positional education and intergenerational status transmission in Brazil

This paper examines the role of education in intergenerational status transmission process Brazil against context marked educational expansion. We ask whether expansion has been successful reducing indirect effects social origins on destinations, mediated via schooling. Specifically, we consider positionality by adopting a relative measure. Using data from National Household Sample Survey predict respondents’ occupational three birth cohorts with path analysis models. compare results using absolute and measures for as mediating variable. Our main findings show that did not reduce association between origin destination either men or women, when is measured positional good. conclusion challenges prevailing understanding contributes to increasing fluidity, especially light declining returns schooling labor market. Based this new evidence, argue losing its value variable within process, which can only be noticed it terms. thus provide important insights how interpret middle income countries such Brazil.
